Airbrushed celebs 'are misleading young girls'
Pictures of airbrushed celebrities in magazines are taking a psychological toll on young women, researchers have found.
A report, led by Dr Helga Dittmar of the University of Sussex, found that the depiction of the 'ideal body' led to a range of problems among those trying to emulate the look. Eating disorders were found to be widespread, along with extreme exercising, depression and even the consideration of cosmetic surgery.
Dr Dittmar called for girls to be educated about the images seen in the media, which are often manipulated to change various aspects of appearance. "Exposure to unrealistic body-perfect ideals like this in the media leads to body dissatisfaction - negative thoughts and feelings about the body - for the great majority of girls and women," she said.
It comes after a study by thegoodsurgeonguide.co.uk revealed that around 70 per cent of women in the UK would like to receive plastic surgery as a Christmas gift.
